A posterior baby means that baby’s back is to the mum’s back, rather than the baby’s back being to the mum’s front. During pregnancy it generally doesn’t mean much, apart from feeling more kicks in the stomach, and the stomach will feel softer. However, for labour it’s a whole different story! A posterior baby can cause ‘back labour’, a labour that causes more back pain, is longer, potentially more painful and more likely to result in augmentation due to ‘failure to progress’!
Firstly most babies do move anterior, but if you’d like baby to move sooner rather than later here’s some pointers:
1. Visit a chiropractor to address any pelvic misalignment issues
2. No slouching in the sofa. When you slouch your spine creates a hammock for the baby to get comfy into!
3. Spend time on all 4’s. The baby’s spine is heavier than her tummy so spending time on all 4’s will encourage baby to move anterior. Whether crawling around or yoga poses like cat / cow or supported child’s pose (check out our pre natal prep highlights video on our IGTV, which includes cat / cow). If / when possible, swimming can help.
4. Lying on your tummy. Using a Bellost Home Pregnancy Pillow, cushions or duvets, find a space where you can lie down on your tummy.
5. Check out Spinning Babies for suitable exercises.
6. Don’t be doing squats or lunges! You don’t want to be pushing the baby further into the pelvis as that’ll make it harder for baby to rotate freely.
